Manifestation en Guiné[email protected] 24

The opposition demonstration took place on monday 14th october 14 in Conakry, the Guinean capital. At the call of the opposition and civil society, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on monday.

Power and opposition are back to back in Guinea. The constitutional review project and the third mandate amputated at Alpha Condé continue to divide the political class and civil society actors. In protest, they called for major demonstrations across the country. During today’s demonstrations, a 16-year-old teenager was killed and 4 others injured. On the police side, no official balance sheet has been made public.

Prior to the mass mobilisation, several opposition leaders were arrested and held in safety for disturbing public order. Last friday, 53 opposition MPs withdrew from debates in the National Assembly denouncing a charade aimed at revising the fundamental law that would allow Alpha Condé to remain in power. At 81 years of age, President Condé, at the current stage, is no longer eligible for a new mandate from a constitutional point of view. Last April, opposition, social and trade union groups came together in the platform, the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (NFDC) to fight this project.
