Nominated for the Golden Ball for the second time, Senegal’s Sadio Mané equals former African glory George Weah and Ghana’s Michael Essien, both of whom were twice nominated for the Golden Ball.
The author of a prolific season with European honours, the unfortunate Sadio Mané, who reached the final of the 2019 Egypt African Cup of Nations, has once again entered the football world. While nothing is yet decided for the Golden Ball, the Senegalese can already boast of having equalled the record of George Weah and Michael Essien. The Reds striker is nominated for a second Golden Ball nomination, as are these two legends.
According to Afrique Sports, Michael Essien was 22nd in 2005 while playing at OL and 24th in 2007 with Chelsea. The only African to win the Golden Ball (1995), George Weah has only been nominated twice as Essien.
