The attack on an Iranian-flagged tanker on Friday in the waters of the Red Sea off the Saudi coast was described as “cowardly” by Tehran.
Quoting Iranian spokesman Ali Rabei, the official IRNA news agency says that “Iran is avoiding haste, carefully examining what happened and verifying the facts”. Rabei also said that “an appropriate response will be given to the perpetrators of this cowardly attack, but we will wait until all aspects of the plot are clarified”.
According to Al Jazeera, Iranian media reports have stated that the incident could fuel friction in a region shaken by attacks on oil tankers and facilities since May. The National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), owner of the attacked ship Sabiti, reported that its hull was hit by two explosions off the Saudi port of Jeddah. But the public company denied reports that the attack originated on Saudi soil.
