The former Tunisian President who died last Thursday was buried on Saturday September 21st, in the holy city of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was taken to his final resting place on Saturday September 21st according to witnesses relayed by the pan-African weekly Jeune Afrique. According to one of the deceased’s sons-in-law, he is buried in the cemetery of Al-Baqi, near the mausoleum of the Prophet Mohammed, after the afternoon prayer. Initially scheduled for Friday, the funeral was postponed to allow the family members of the former leader to pay him a final tribute.

Président de la République tunisienne du 7 novembre 1987 au 14 janvier 2011, Ben Ali a été chassé du pouvoir par un mouvement qualifié plus tard de printemps arabe. En 2011, il avait été condamné par contumace à 35 ans de prison pour de multiples charges, dont corruption et torture et l’année suivante à 20 ans de prison supplémentaires pour meurtre et pillage. Cette disparition intervient au moment où la Tunisie est en plein processus électoral pour la succession du président  décédé en juillet dernier

President of the Tunisian Republic from November 7th, 1987 to January 14th, 2011, Ben Ali was ousted from power by a movement later described as the Arab spring. In 2011, he was sentenced in absentia to 35 years in prison for multiple charges, including corruption and torture, and the following year to an additional 20 years for murder and looting.
