Following the drone attacks on Saudi Arabia a week ago, which Washington blamed directly on Iran, the United States decided to strengthen Saudi forces by providing troops to the country. The objective is to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s anti-aircraft and anti-missile defences.

The Pentagon said the deployment would involve a moderate number of troops, not thousands, and would be mainly defensive in nature, reports the CGTN. He also detailed, according to the report, plans to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. An American aircraft carrier is also reportedly being deployed in the region indefinitely. This comes at a time when not long ago, according to Reuters, the Pentagon was considering sending anti-missile batteries, drones and more fighter aircraft.

In response to the kingdom’s request, the president approved the deployment of U.S. forces, which will be defensive in nature and mainly focused on aircraft and missile defense,” U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said at a press briefing. “We will also work to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to improve their ability to defend themselves,” he said.
