Libyan crisis: Khalifa Haftar discusses political solutions with US ambassador

U.S. Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland met with Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar in Abu Dhabi on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy revealed in a brief statement late last night.

The two men discussed “the current situation in Libya and the prospects for finding a political solution to the Libyan conflict“. The meeting precedes an international conference on Libya planned by Germany aimed at achieving a ceasefire for the current fighting and a political solution to the Libyan crisis. It will be recalled that Haftar and his LNA launched an attack on Tripoli on April 4 under the pretext of “freeing” it from the “terrorists, Islamists and militias” controlling the capital.

Haftar’s military campaign has so far failed in Tripoli. Its forces suffered a setback in Gharian from where they were driven out by forces defending the capital and aligned with the internationally recognized Faiez Serraj government. Indeed, after the initial advances of its forces on the edges of the capital obtained thanks to the advantage of equipment, Haftar’s forces found themselves at best in a deadlock and would often have been pushed further away from the capital.
