Liberia: 26 students and two teachers killed in Koranic school fire

In Liberia, a fire in a Koranic school killed 26 children in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the president said.

26 students and two teachers were killed in a fire that destroyed a Koranic school in Paynesville, Liberia. This fire occurred in a dormitory where students were sleeping near the mosque. According to several media reports, only the imam and two students were able to escape. The age of the victims is between 10 and 20 years old. The causes of the fire are not yet known, but the authorities have announced the opening of an investigation to determine who is responsible.

In the face of this tragedy, the Liberian President visited the scene of the disaster and also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families. “We are here to encourage the parents of the victims to have strength because it is painful to lose children in this way. Our compassion goes to bereaved families,” President Georges Weah told reporters in Paynesville, Monrovia, the capital.
